Rey, authors of the Curious George books and local naturalists. The Rey Center offers guided hikes, nature walks and astronomy talks throughout the year. The nearby Squam Lakes Natural Science Center is a great place to see native NH animals up close and personal. Every Sunday, in season, a naturalist from the Science Center brings bird or other critter to the valley for an exclusive “animal encounter.” And the Waterville Valley Recreation Department offers guided hikes for all abilities in the summer. When you’re surrounded by the White Mountain National Forest, you’re bound to witness or stumble across the beauty of our natural environment right outside your inn, lodge or condominium. As soon as you exit Interstate 93, you’ll notice the main road into Waterville Valley (Rte 49) meanders alongside the Mad River, one of the mighty waterways that feeds NH’s largest river, the Pemigewasset. During snowmelt or after a particularly hard stretch of rain, the Mad River quite literally lives up to its name. Once in the valley, you’ll be struck by the stately 4000′ mountains that surround us. Even more so, the surrounding, undeveloped forest which has remained unchanged thousands of years. Pines, white birch, ash and maple trees are prevalent, the latter lighting up the landscape in autumn with their deep reds, yellows and oranges. And using the forest as their refuge, deer, moose, bobcat and black bear are spotted frequently, none of which usually bother humans as long as you keep your distance.
